A new integrated system to reduce waste by medical equipment and medical WEEE
Presented in Life+ 2013 call, the project has the aim to study and realise a new integrated management system for discarded medical equipment, in particular biomedical devices, minimising the waste production from medical equipment disposal and maximising their re-use and regeneration.
Starting with a screening of medical institutions and veterinary clinics and an analysis of the state of art of disused medical equipment in Italy and Romania, the project develops the recovery of medical equipment in Italy and Romania, at partners’ laboratories, to be donated and reused.
The project started in July 2014 and it will end in June 2017, for a period of 36 months, in Italy and Romania.
First equipment recovered and donated
In Life-MED project implementation actions, after involving several medical institutions in Italy, contacted in a first step, different medical equipment was recovered and a first sending was made to Kaunas (Lithuania) on the 12th of May 2015, in cooperation with local authorities.
On the 12th of May 2015 a survey was organised to Bucharest in order to explore opportunities of cooperation and donation of Life-MED recovered equipment.
Successful demonstrative days in Italy and Romania
The project foresees the organisation of three demonstrative days in Italy at the Faculty of Engineer in Brescia and three lessons at the Faculty of Medical Engineer in Bucharest, one event per year in each country.
The aim of the lessons is to present the students a general overview of the project, the state of art and the results achieved, as a best practice.
In Italy one lesson was organised at the Brescia Clinical Engineering Faculty on the 19th of May 2015 and in Romania on the 26th of May 2015 at Bucharest Faculty of Medical Engineering.
Two other demonstrative days were organised at in AIIC (Italian Association of Clinical Engineers) on the 15th of May 2015 in Cagliari (Italy) during AIIC National Meeting and in Bucharest as a transnational meeting on the 18th-20th of March 2015.
In Romania the first lesson was realised on the 26th of May 2015 at Bucharest Faculty of Medical Engineering with the participation of nearly 50 students, the faculty dean and a handfull of professors. Patrick Ouriaghli, director of Ateliere Fara Frontiere, a project partner, presented to the third and last year students the Life Med project, its objectives, partners, next steps and expected results until june 2017.
He insisted on the importance of reducing waste and favouring reuse of valuable equipment and proposed the students to be a part of the new integrated system, helping the project partners to get a grip of the medical equipment flow in Romania and launching a „solidarity path” to help poorer medical institutions to get proper equipment. He encouraged them to volunteer or be future trainees within Ateliere Fara Frontiere’s future medical equipment refurbishing laboratory in early 2016. The students were very receptive, as well as their professors, even more when they learnt that the first shipping of refurbished medical equipment from Italy to Romania will be at the benefit of Bucharest Faculty of Medical Engineering and its students organization, ASIM, with both of which Ateliere Fara Frontiere signed partnership agreements on the same day. So they can practice what they learn also at the university and become the skilled and experienced professionals the Romanian medical system needs.

First networking meeting in LIFE-MED project
On the 28th of July 2015 CAUTO, the project coordinator, will be present with the LIFE-MED project at EXPO Milan 2015, Spazio espositivo by Intesa Sanpaolo, sala Meeting 15.00-17.30.
The networking activity aims to promote some meetings to exchange and to share experiences and knowledge in European projects communication and dissemination, to assess the replicability of one or more actions realised in the project.
The first session (1h) will be dedicated to the presentation of the projects involved in the networking activity, such as WEEN MODELS (Genova, Italy), LIFE INFOCYCLE (Kallithea, Greece), AUTOPLAST (Vestone , Italy)
The second session will foresee a round table on communication and dissemination tools realised in the European projects.
